Access BRFSS Data
Since 1984 DHHS has conducted the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the prevalence of and trend in health-related behaviors in the non-institutionalized Utah adult population. Currently the BRFSS is conducted on both landlines and cellphones. The in-house survey center at DHHS calls 12,500 randomly selected households throughout the entire state. It is not available by mail or online. Data collected through the BRFSS is completely confidential. Everyone’s answers are aggregated and we do not collect any identifying information.
Findings from this survey are extremely useful for improving Utah’s health. By collecting information from randomly selected households across the state, public health officials at every level are able to understand the health strengths and weaknesses statewide and in much smaller communities. This enables public health officials to target health campaigns thereby using tax dollars effectively.

Access BRFSS data
If you are interested in accessing one of the annual BRFSS datasets in its entirety, please contact the BRFSS coordinator, Shige Onda, at [email protected]. There is a fee associated with this process, as well as a formal data-sharing agreement (DSA). BRFSS data are also available on Utah’s Indicator-Based Information System (IBIS). This website provides access to static health indicator reports, many of which include BRFSS data. BRFSS data are also available for custom queries on IBIS.
